Some emulsifiers are at their best in a simple lotion. BioSuga™ Mulse C80—is the one to reach for when the formula asks for more. This bio-based, PEG-free, nonionic oil-in-water emulsifier is designed to carry bulk oil phases and remain effective in systems containing comparatively high levels of electrolytes, acids, or bases.
With an HLB of 8–10, BioSuga Mulse C80 can serve as a primary or co-emulsifier while helping disperse vegetable oils, emollient esters, fragrances, and other lipophilic materials. Using green chemistry techniques, the manufacturer has demonstrated the possibilities in lotions, mineral sunscreen, BB cream, and facial cleansing oil prototypes, opening a much broader creative field across skin care, sun care, color cosmetics, deodorants, hair care, and rinse-off formulations.
Product Benefits
- Emulsifies bulk quantities of vegetable oils, emollient esters, and other lipophilic materials.
- Functions as either a primary emulsifier or a supporting co-emulsifier.
- Helps disperse fragrance and oil-based materials throughout the formulation.
- Is compatible with nonionic, anionic, and cationic ingredients.
- Remains useful in formulations containing comparatively high levels of electrolyte, acid, or base.
- Has been demonstrated in mineral-filter and pigmented prototypes when paired with the appropriate dispersion and rheology systems.
- Supports cleansing oil development as part of a complete emulsifier system.
- Has minimal impact on the finished product’s color and odor.
- Is reported by the manufacturer as readily biodegradable under OECD 301 methods.
Formulation Notes
- BioSuga Mulse C80 uses the D6 grade. D6 and D9 share the same INCI and CAS number but are not interchangeable: D6 is the HLB 8–10 bulk O/W emulsifier, while D9 is the HLB 12–14 clear-system and fragrance solubilizer.
- Use level is formulation-dependent. Supplier prototypes demonstrate 4% in an O/W body lotion and mineral sunscreen, and 6% in a facial cleansing oil. These are formulation examples, not a universal recommended range.
- In supplier hot-process O/W prototypes, the emulsifier is added to the water phase, both phases are heated to approximately 70–85°C, and the combined emulsion is homogenized.
- In the supplier cleansing oil prototype, it is added at 50–55°C as one component of a multi-emulsifier system.
- Mineral-filter and pigmented formulations still require an appropriate dispersion strategy; supplier prototypes pair this emulsifier with pre-dispersed filters and other system aids.
- Homogenization is recommended. Additional stabilizers, gums, fatty alcohols, or other structurants may be needed to achieve the desired viscosity and long-term stability.
- The material is supplied at 65–70% solids. Calculate use levels on an as-supplied basis unless intentionally normalizing for solids.
