Ferulic Acid is a phenolic compound found in plant cell walls and harnessed for its antioxidant activity, often used in advanced skincare formulations for environmental stress protection positioning, radiance support, visible tone refinement, and antioxidant-focused product concepts. It is especially valued in brightening serums, vitamin C systems, daily antioxidant treatments, and age-support formulas.

Ferulic Acid is best known by formulators for its ability to complement other antioxidants, particularly vitamin C and vitamin E, making it a strong choice for high-performance facial serums and premium treatment formulations.

  • Effective free radical scavenger to minimize oxidation in the formula and in the skin
  • Helps improve the appearance of dull, tired-looking skin
  • Well suited for even-tone and brightening-positioned formulas
  • Supports antioxidant protection positioning in daily skincare
  • Helps support the appearance of smoother, healthier-looking skin
  • Complements multi-active formulas targeting environmental stress and visible skin fatigue
  • Ideal for premium treatment serums and antioxidant booster products

  • Use: 0.5–1.0%
  • Solubility: Poor water solubility; best incorporated through a compatible solvent such as propanediol , propylene glycol, or ethanol.
  • Pre-Mix: Pre-wet or pre-dissolve in propanediol completely before adding to the main batch.
  • Vitamin C Serum Processing: In low-pH vitamin C systems, Ferulic Acid may be added to a temporarily alkaline aqueous base after pre-mixing with propanediol; vitamin C addition then brings the finished formula back into the target acidic pH range.
  • Pair with Vitamin E (Tocopherols) to maximize efficacy; if utilizing in a water-based formulation, use a solubilizer to incorporate the tocopherols into your main batch

  • Supports antioxidant-focused skincare positioning
  • Helps support formulas designed for environmental stress exposure
  • Enhances brightening and radiance-focused product concepts
  • Pairs especially well with vitamin C and vitamin E systems
  • Supports smoother-looking, more refined skin appearance
  • Adds strong technical and consumer-recognition value to advanced facial serums
  • Useful in formulas designed for dullness, uneven tone appearance, and early visible signs of aging

Jennifer says…

“Ferulic Acid is a beautiful active when you want a stable formula designed with protection in mind. I like it as part of an antioxidant systems where it can support the performance of vitamin C, vitamin E, and other radiance-focused actives. The key is not to treat it like an easy water-soluble powder—its solubility and oxidation behavior need real formulation attention.

For our white label vitamin C serum process, I pre-mix Ferulic Acid with a small amount of propanediol before adding it into the base. The base is temporarily adjusted alkaline prior to its addition, which helps with incorporation, and then the vitamin C addition brings the finished formula back down into the target acidic pH range (3.4 – 3.8). That processing sequence makes a big difference in clarity and efficacy of your final formulation.”
