Distarch Phosphate is rice starch refined into an ultra-fine, phosphate cross-linked powder engineered to hold its shape and silkiness through heat, processing, and time on the shelf, something native rice starch cannot do on its own. The result is a natural, COSMOS Approved and BDIH-conforming ingredient with a rare kind of versatility: dust it into a pressed powder or eyeshadow and watch it blur imperfections into a soft, velvety glow; fold it into a lipstick or pencil and colors lay down true and even; work it into a lotion, cream, or balm and it turns silky on the skin, cutting the greasy weight of oils without dulling the finish. It is the kind of ingredient that gets a formulator sketching new products: a barely-there setting powder, a talc-free bronzer, a balm that feels weightless, because it opens the door to natural formulas that still perform like the synthetic-heavy ones customers already love. For any brand chasing that elusive velvet finish while staying natural, COSMOS or BDIH compliant, Distarch Phosphate is worth discovering.
Product Benefits
• Because of the small particle size Distarch Phosphate (Rice PO4 Natural) is a perfect powder ingredient for fine face powder, make-ups as compact powders, complexion groundings, eye shadows, powder pencils and loose powders.
• Distarch Phosphate (Rice PO4 Natural) can be processed sole or as addition to powder bases. Remarkable properties compared to talcum are the better opacity and the better adhesion to the skin.
• A finish of powder or powder bases with Distarch Phosphate (Rice PO4 Natural) gives them an impression of velvet skin. This effect is especially appreciated for skin powders and decorative powders.Â
• Has a matte effect, similar to titanium dioxide. Due to the microcrystalline structure, s natural soft glimmer can enhance the appearance of the skin, blurring and blending seamlessly; the result is a transition between powdered to un-powdered skin areas is not defined but flowing.
• Distarch Phosphate (Rice PO4 Natural) has good opacity, adhesion and creaminess and does not clog pores. The non-swelling properties of Distarch Phosphate (Rice PO4 Natural) means that pores are blurred instead of made more visible, even after long-term application (contrary to native rice starch).
• Distarch Phosphate (Rice PO4 Natural) is gentle and does not irritate mucosa.

- Moisture: max. 6.0%
- Solubility: insoluble in water and other solvents; non-swelling, cook-up stable
- Reported use levels: approx. 1% in decorative/color cosmetics, 5-6% in emulsions and aerosol powders, and up to 30% in anhydrous systems formulated as a silicone-elastomer replacement
- Processing: for boiling-resistant use, disperse in the aqueous phase before emulsification for natural thickening and stabilization, or add post-emulsification (approx. 40°C) to retain granular form and silky skin feel; for anhydrous or powder systems, blend directly into the powder base or oil phase

Jennifer says…
“Rice PO4 Natural is one of the more elegant ingredients I’ve worked with for replacing synthetic fillers. What impressed me first was the oil absorption data against jojoba oil, it actually outperforms talc and most other starches, which explains why it holds up so well in pressed powders and mattifying formulas. The trade-off to plan for is timing: added before emulsification, it thickens and stabilizes like a native starch, but added after, around 40°C, it keeps its granular structure and gives that silky, non-greasy finish instead. Get the phase wrong and you lose the effect you were formulating for in the first place.“
Why Formulator's Love it
- Helps improve the appearance of a soft, velvety skin finish in powder and pressed formats
- Supports a mattifying appearance comparable to titanium dioxide
- Helps improve product opacity and adhesion to skin compared to talc
- Contributes to reduced greasy or sticky after-feel in emulsions and anhydrous balms
- Supports smoother spreadability in emulsions through a ball-bearing effect between particles
- Helps support even, true color pay-off in pigmented formats such as lipstick, rouge, and pencils
- Supports a longer-lasting moisturized feel by adsorbing water phase during processing and releasing it gradually on application
- Non-swelling profile helps maintain pore appearance with long-term use, in contrast to native rice starch
