Getting oil to disappear into water is easy to describe and much harder to do elegantly—especially when PEGs and ethoxylated solubilizers are off the table. BioSuga™ Mulse C20—is a 100% biobased, nonionic solubilizer designed to bring fragrances, essential oils, and other lipophilic materials into water-only, aqueous-alcoholic, and water-and-surfactant systems with minimal effect on finished color, odor, or viscosity.

With an HLB of 12–14, C20 travels easily from perfumed waters, facial and body mists, micellar waters, deodorizing sprays, shampoos, hair gels, body washes, and wipes to a supporting role in creams and lotions. It can be cold or hot processed, evaluated as a premix or post-add, and used in systems containing comparatively high levels of electrolyte, acid, or base.

  • Solubilizes fragrances, essential oils, and other lipophilic materials in aqueous and aqueous-alcoholic systems.
  • Works in both water-only products and formulas containing surfactants.
  • Supports clear systems when the selected oil, solubilizer ratio, and processing method are compatible.
  • Is compatible with nonionic, anionic, and cationic surfactants.
  • Remains useful in systems containing comparatively high levels of electrolyte, acid, or base.
  • Can be cold or hot processed and evaluated through either premixing or post-addition.
  • Functions as a co-emulsifier in creams and lotions without dictating the finished viscosity.
  • Can be screened as a biobased, PEG-free alternative to conventional ethoxylated solubilizers such as Polysorbate 20 and PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil.
  • Has minimal effect on finished color and is reported by the manufacturer to have no effect on odor or viscosity.
  • Is readily biodegradable under OECD 301D testing.

  • BioSuga Mulse C20 is not Polysorbate 20. “C20” is Dauphine Organics’ house product name for the D9 grade.
  • D9 and Poly Suga®Mulse D6 share the same INCI and CAS number but are not interchangeable. D9 is the HLB 12–14 fragrance solubilizer; D6 is the HLB 8–10 bulk O/W emulsifier.
  • The fragrance decides the ratio. Oil polarity and composition can dramatically change how much solubilizer is required, so the leave-on and rinse-off use levels should be treated as starting guidance.
  • The supplier demonstrates 5% D9 with 1% lavender oil, but this is an example—not a universal 5:1 ratio.
  • For clear products, create a small solubilizer curve: begin with several oil-to-C20 ratios, mix until uniform, and compare clarity before committing to a full batch.
  • Supplier testing supports both premixing and post-addition. One documented screening method combines the oil and solubilizer before adding them to deionized water, then mixes at approximately 40°C for 5–10 minutes.
  • Supplier starting formulas demonstrate 1.5% in a micellar solution and 1% in a textured-hair shampoo . These are developmental examples, not fixed ratios.
  • The listed pH of 7.0 describes the raw material tested at a 10% aqueous dilution; it is not a required finished-product pH.
  • C20 is not a viscosity builder. Establish the rheology of shampoos, washes, gels, and other structured products separately.
  • This ingredient does not replace a preservation system. Confirm clarity, fragrance compatibility, preservation, packaging compatibility, and physical stability in the finished formulation.
